Grief over Heath

As the world went about its day, it wasn't long before the sad and shocking news broke of the passing of young Australian actor Heath Ledger. While rumours still remain rife about the cause of death, everyone would agree that his story was one that ended much too soon.

Heath showed his talent early on with the hit teen movie "10 Things I Hate About You." His star started to rise as he took on more roles in films including "The Patriot" with Mel Gibson and "Ned Kelly" with Orlando Bloom and Naomi Watts. He showed his craft by taking on such diverse roles in films such as "A Knight's Tale," "Monster's Ball," "Casanova," "The Brothers Grimm" and was also nominated for an Oscar for "Brokeback Mountain."

His career was set to rise further in the upcoming Batman movie "The Dark Knight," in which he plays Batman's arch-nemesis, The Joker.

With all his talent, Heath was said to have no concern for the 'celebrity game'. The great tragedy is not that the world lost a famous actor at the prime of his life, but a little girl lost her daddy, sisters lost a brother and parents lost a son.

Recent reports indicate that Heath suffered from pneumonia and insomnia when he died, and that his death may have been a result of complications with prescription medications he was being treated with.

While his passing is surrounded with uncertainty, what is certain is that while prescribed medication can cause healing, if abused or misunderstood it can also, tragically, bring death. Whether he intentionally overdosed or if his fatality was an accident, it has definitely struck a deep chord with many.

Grief in any form can be hard to deal with and most people respond to angst in varying ways. It's important though that if you are feeling loss or anguish, in any form, to talk things over with trusted people. Whether that is with your friends, a teacher, a school counsellor or even a professional help-line, it is best not to struggle alone with grief. In this instance, it might help to write a diary entry of your thoughts and feelings or even a note of your condolences to his family. You may also express your feelings and pay homage to the great inspiration Heath was to many here at WAGN. Most of all, here at WAGN we believe that every life matters.
