There are going to be times when you just don't get what the teacher is talking about or you miss some work because you were absent, and the list goes on. Whatever the reason for you not understanding a topic or direction, you need to ASK about it. All too often girls feel embarrassed or think they don't want to draw attention to themselves, or it is totally UNCOOL and therefore don't speak up and ask the questions that would make life a whole lot easier.
- Ask your teachers: Teachers are paid to impart their knowledge to you! If you don't understand something, ask questions until you do. Putting your hand up in class can be intimidating for some people but others are probably also benefiting from hearing the answers to your questions. If you can't raise the courage to ask in front of the class, see you teacher at lunch or after class. Don't give up until you "get it". Teachers aren't usually as intimidating as you may think…they are people too and believe it or not, they were high school students just like you once!
- Ask your friends: If you have friends in the same class or same subjects, it's great to have study groups together and spend time discussing assignments or exams. You'll often find that you have different strengths and when you work together and share your knowledge, your learning can be enhanced greatly. Forget about school work being an "uncool" topic of conversation and think about your future goals and how to best attain them by supporting each other.
- Ask your parents: Parents often have great knowledge and ideas. Discuss your subjects and assignments with them. You never know, they may surprise you and give you some really valuable advice or ideas. If you are struggling with your school work, you may also need to ask your parents about seeing a tutor or other options for improving your grades.
So the tip for this month regarding learning is to
ASK! Don't stay in the dark, get in the know
and make sure you give yourself the best chance to succeed.
