Combating Homesickness

Homesickness is a natural part of school life when you are studying overseas, particularly when you may have limited access to friends and family. The many challenges you will face in a new environment can cause you to seek out the familiar and yearn for that feeling of comfort you are used to at home. Unfortunately, you can't always jump on the next plane home and get your 'fix' of family of friends, and homesickness and feelings of loneliness can be really tough. So, if you're struggling to beat the blues, here are some homesickness helpers to pick you up.

  • Get involved!
Social groups and events are an important part of your overseas experience. Check out the school bulletins or community newspaper to find out what's happening at your school or in your area and join in. Attend a sporting event, concert or community program.
  • Do something you enjoy!
Almost everyone has a favourite hobby, sport, or past time. Go for a morning walk, read a good book, add some pages to your scrapbook, paint, or shoot some hoops. Doing something you enjoy will add some happiness to your day and give your mind a break from thinking of home.
  • Use a weekly planner!
Make notes about what's going on each day. Don't just use your planner for homework and assignments, but use it as a social calendar and try to fill it up as much as you can. Make plans for the weekend and write them down so you have something to look forward to.
  • Go out with a friend!
A trip to the local ice cream parlour or sushi train can fix a bout of the blues. Look to an older student or someone you can confide in to help make your transition from home a little easier. You may discover your friend has struggled or is still struggling with the same problems as you.
  • Keep in touch with your family!
Keeping in touch with your parents and siblings will help you adjust to your move overseas. Send e-mail to each other or set up your own web site for correspondence from friends back home.
  • Write in a diary
Try writing in a journal or diary the next time you are feeling down. Your English teachers won't be worried about your grammar for this one! Just write down what's on your mind and express some of your worries and fears. Over time, you can reflect on what you wrote and see how far you've come.
  • Visit a new place!
Catch a bus you usually wouldn't and go exploring a bit to see a new side of town, or plan a weekend get-away with friends. Exploring your new home-away-from-home will add some excitement to your regular school routine. You may even meet new friends or find a new favourite hang out.
  • Set goals!
A little homesickness is normal as you adjust to your new school and surroundings, but you can't let it dampen your spirit. Now is a good time to remember your dreams and think about how much you can accomplish with some effort and hard work. Write down what you want to accomplish and commit yourself to working towards your goals. Your attitude and confidence will improve as you progress.
